Dear Human Era Explorer,

I am thrilled to welcome you to the first issue of the Human Era newsletter. Our journey beings today, but not from the year 2023, as you might be accustomed to. Instead, we invite you to join us as we step into the year 12,023 HE (Human Era).

The human era, is our shared journey that stretches back 12,000 years to the dawn of human civilisation to the present day, and look optimistically towards the future. This concept, was proposed by the scientist Cesare Emiliani who argued that the Gregorian calendar didn’t accurately represent the true breadth of the human history. Instead, he suggested a more inclusive system, one that pushed our timeline’s starting point to around the conventional 10,000 BC.

By using the Human Era calendar, we embrace a broader perspective on our history. We do so not to discard the familiar Gregorian calendar that has served us well, but to enhance our appreciate of the epic journey humanity embarked upon. It’s a journey that reminds us of the marvels we have achieved as a species, the resilience we have shown in the face of adversity, and the possibilities that lie ahead.

The current challenges we face are daunting. From environmental threats to socio-economic disparities, we are living in an era of global uncertainty. Yet, when viewed through the lens of the Human Era, we realise that these are but chapters in an ongoing story - a story that we are collectively authoring. This is why I believe looking back through our shared history is so essential. It allows us to grasp the magnitude of our past accomplishments and draw strength from them.

Remembering our journey as a 12,023-year-old civilisation promotes humility. We are humbled by the knowledge of our ancient roots and the struggles and triumphs of our ancestors. Our history is a testament to human resilience, ingenuity, and the relentless pursuit of progress. By acknowledging this, we realise that we are not merely inhabitants of this world, but the custodians of a legacy spanning millennia. 

At the same time, our vast history should empower us. We indeed stand on the shoulders of giants, on the achievements of those who have come before us. We are equipped with tools, knowledge, and capabilities that no other generation in the past 12,023 years has had. We have the power to shape the future, guided by the lessons of our shared past.

As we embark on this journey together, we hope that this newsletter will inspire you to look beyond the horizon of the present and engage in a profound and meaningful connection with our shared human history. We want to instil a sense of empowerment, optimism, and responsibility to the human era community. We believe that understanding our past is the key to building a future where humanity thrives in harmony with our beautiful planet Earth.
